Deep beneath the mountain, in the wet dark, a creature named Sméagor found this magazine and loved it more than anything, more than fish, more than sunlight, and it kept him thin and hungry and whispering to himself for five hundred years, my precious, my 15 rounds of precious, until one day a burglar named Bilbro, lost and patting the cave floor, closed his fingers around it and slipped it into his pocket like it was nothing, like it wasn’t the most important compact-frame magazine in all the world. There followed riddles, and a chase, and a great deal of screaming about theft, but Bilbro walked out of that mountain with the mag and told absolutely no one exactly how he got it, which, between us, is a little suspicious.

For sixty years it sat quietly in the Shyre, doing nothing, aging into what the trade calls New Old Stock, until Bilbro, old now, tired, and eyeing the horizon, laid it down at last and handed it to his nephew Frodi with a look that said this is your problem now. And here is the part the poems leave out: there were never just one. There are many. A whole box of them, each one precious, each one New Old Stock, each one waiting in the dark for a hand to close around it. Yours, ideally. We have several. They do not require a volcano.
